New York vintage stores often get a - well deserved - bad rap. They’re pricey and obviously sourced from cheaper spots in our home towns. But lately 5th Avenue in Park Slope has been changing our mind, with the newly revamped Guvnor’s Thrift and fantastically organized Odd Twin, just celebrating their one year anniversary. We grab a cup of coffee from Gorilla - just recovering from their staffing drama - and spend a weekend morning in the racks.

8. The Meat Hook + Beco: Williamsburg, Brooklyn

It’s totally that springy time of year when every weekend should involve a BBQ. Even if you don’t have a backyard. Luckily there are kind friends & family with backyards and rooftop grills. And The Meat Hook for beautiful steak, sausage … not to mention impulse buys at every turn - badass knives, cool jars, home brewing supplies. And for a drink after, when you just want to sit by big open windows, there’s Beco - beachy Brazilian vibes in Brooklyn. We love the pao de quejo with drinks - and for brunch and dinner, the filet mignon sandwich.

7. Erie Basin + Fort Defiance: Red Hook, Brooklyn

Red Hook on a sunny Sunday does the heart good. So does Erie Basin and its ever-changing antique & jewelry curiosities. From signet and cameo rings to amazing portraits from an Indiana Longfellow’s lodge discovered on our last trip (they’re kind of like a Midwestern version of the Masons, we learned), every time we go back to the shop we’re mesmerized. A quick visit to the block turns into an afternoon with a drink from Fort Defiance across the street - preferably made with what’s rightfully called the “Best Seltzer in Brooklyn.” Booze is normally in the plan for us, but their homemade lemonade and gingerale are good enough to keep us sober.

5. Pacific Street + Building on Bond: Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

It’s been gorgeous out & nothing beats mornings wandering around the neighborhood - plus some awesome, chill coffee + breakfast. Pacific Street in Boerum Hill delivers … walking 3rd Ave towards the water is the best of Brooklyn brownstone daydreaming. Coffee & brunch is at Building on Bond, tucked on a beautiful block. We love to sit back at their tables surrounded by walls and shelves built from old school, library and industrial pieces. And the hash + eggs is awesome.

4. The West Side Market + Nate's: Cleveland, Ohio

Sometimes you really need a weekend at home. And for us (ok 1/2 of us) home is eating our way through Cleveland, starting at The West Side Market and Nate’s Deli. Buy sausage for dinner, snack on Irish soda bread and eye a pierogi at the market, established in 1840. Then head next door for amazing hummos and fatoush at Nate’s. It’s always served with a bag of local Aladdin’s Bakery pita on the side.

Rain gives us an excuse for the laziest weekends imaginable. But staying home is only one option. Iona shows Premier League football (aka, soccer) in the mornings so you can get cozy and drink early (it’s usually raining in the U.K. anyway) and Pete’s keeps the warm, boozy vibe going into the afternoon.

When the week’s been long, a good, cheap massage and good, stiff drink have helped us ease into the weekend. We’re lucky to have two of Brooklyn’s finest close by. Qi Gong Tuina’s kind staff just seem to know what you need – and so do the bartenders at O’Connor’s.
